Festival at the River - Aug 2011

Sky River?  No, the Stilliguamish River.  A music festival put on by the tribe of the same name - an annual event - this was the 22nd year.  This year, Friday music was dedicated to the first multi-day you-don't-have-to-drive-home-tonight rock festival.  That was the "Sky River Rock Festival and Lighter than Air Fair" held in 1968 not far from the Stilliguamish (and a fun time was had by all - visit HistoryLink).

For 2011, the acts invited to play were Jesse Collin Young, Buffy Saint-Marie, It's a Beautiful Day, Big Brother and the Holding Company and Canned Heat - all acts that were in the festival circuit back in the late 1960's when the shine was still on the faces.  The Friday concert was great - weather was nice, food was good and the crowd was in the mood - if not a little long in the tooth.

The quality of the music was amazing.  It was obvious these musicians have kept their music fresh - the familiar songs brought back deeply warm memories, especially Jesse and Beautiful Day.  Big Brother was the first band Janis Joplin achieved fame with - she moved on to a larger group and Big Brother moved past their moment of greatest fame.  At the 2011 festival they had a singer who was a musical ringer for Janice - wow.
